Here we&#8217;ll cover trade in its most primitive form, the bartering system, and how money was born out of necessity.<\/span>\n\nBartering is a method of exchange that relies on the direct trade of goods and services rather than the use of money. It has been used for centuries as a way for people to obtain the products and services they need. While the bartering system has its benefits, it is not without significant limitations.<sup>1<\/sup> In this article, we will explore some of the main limitations of the bartering system and how money solved them.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-834290c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"834290c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Multiple prices<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-49d8549 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"49d8549\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The bartering system introduces the issue of multiple prices per good.[2] In an economy of two items, apples and pears, there will be one exchange rate. Apples priced in pears (e.g. 1 apple for 2 pears) and the reciprocal to that would be pears priced in apples (0.5 apples per pear). When you increase the number of goods in such an economy, the number of exchange rates increases substantially. If we have four goods (apples, pears, bananas, and oranges), the number of exchange rates increases to six.\u00a0<\/p><ul><li>Apples priced in Pears<\/li><li>Apples priced in Bananas<\/li><li>Apples\u00a0priced in Oranges<\/li><li>Pears priced in Bananas<\/li><li>Pears priced in Oranges<\/li><li>Bananas priced in Oranges<\/li><\/ul><p>If we have one hundred goods to trade, that would result in 4950 exchange rates.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-851f5cb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"851f5cb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>No. of exchange rates = n x (n-1)\/2<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>n = number of goods<\/b><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f900d4f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f900d4f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Using the formula above, for your average Walmart store that holds about 10,000 goods, you&#8217;d be looking at an eye-watering 49,995,000 exchange rates. In small economies, a handful of exchange rates are manageable. The bartering system would not be able to scale to a global economy (let alone a single Walmart one).<\/p>\n<p>With the use of money, there will be one exchange rate per good.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2 goods = 2 exchange rates<\/li>\n<li>6 goods = 6 exchange rates<\/li>\n<li>100 goods = 100 exchange rates<\/li>\n<li>10,000 goods = 10,000 exchange rates<\/li>\n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a7fe0ce elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"a7fe0ce\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Coincidence of Wants<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3ef62d4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3ef62d4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe bigger issue with bartering, and the main problem money solves, is the coincidence of wants problem. To successfully arrange a trade you need to find a trading partner who<b> has what you want<\/b> and<b> wants what<\/b> <b>you have<\/b>. If one of those conditions is not met, the trade will not take place. The owner of the house may not need two million pencils and you could not acquire fractions of a house.\u00a0<span style=\"font-style: inherit; background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5); color: var(--ast-global-color-3);\">In the example given,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; font-style: inherit; color: var(--ast-global-color-3); background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\">each individual pencil has a relatively small value (much less than most goods or services).\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit; color: var(--ast-global-color-3); background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\">You can trade one pencil, a dozen pencils, or two million pencils. It doesn&#8217;t really matter. But if the homeowner has no need for so many pencils, the trade will not take place. \u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>On the other hand, a house is not very divisible. Even if the homeowner only needed 30 pencils, you can&#8217;t trade just part of a house. A house is typically a large, expensive asset, and it&#8217;s not practical to trade a small piece of it. Since the oranges are perishable, by the time you accumulated enough oranges, half your stock would have gone rotten.\u00a0<\/p><p>In this example, the orange has a limited lifespan. Each orange that is picked <b>loses its value over time<\/b> quickly (much quicker than the truck). Healthy delicious oranges are typically more valuable to someone than using rotten ones for compost. By the time you think you have enough oranges saved, you&#8217;ll find you have to return to the orange farm to pick more. Typically, things like factories and houses are immovable. For this trade to occur, you must want a house specifically on that mountain. Not only that, but at the same time your trading partner will have to want a factory on the side of that specific lake. Did someone invent &#8220;money&#8221; or has it always been around? Lets use an\u00a0<\/span>example to help understand this.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-style: inherit; background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5); color: var(--ast-global-color-3);\">Bob wants to trade his apples for Alice&#8217;s fish. The problem is Alice is allergic to apples and doesn&#8217;t want any of Bob&#8217;s apples. Bob overhears that Alice really likes bananas, but bob doesn&#8217;t have any. Luckily, Bob knows Mark, who owns a banana plantation. Bob goes to Mark to trade his Apples for Mark&#8217;s Bananas. Bob then uses these newly acquired bananas to trade for Alice&#8217;s fish.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>What Happened?<\/p><p>Bob acquired the bananas purely for the purpose of acquiring another good (in this case Alice&#8217;s fish). In this instance, he used bananas as money. We have <b>Consumption Goods<\/b>\u00a0which are goods we consume, such as bread for nutrition. Historically there was no one person or institution that established what was considered money or what wasn&#8217;t.\u00a0<span style=\"background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5); color: var(--ast-global-color-3); font-size: 1rem;\">A medium of exchange will develop organically in any economy greater than 10 people<\/span><span style=\"background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\"><span style=\"color: var(--ast-global-color-3); font-style: inherit;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\n\n<span style=\"background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\"><span style=\"color: var(--ast-global-color-3); font-style: inherit;\">The good that was most easily accepted in any single economy was the one that was used as money. <b>Saleability<\/b> is another way to describe the ease of acceptance i.e.<\/span><span style=\"color: var(--ast-global-color-3); font-style: inherit;\">\u00a0the good that was most easily sold (most saleable) would be used as money.<sup>3<\/sup> This was a recursive story.
